Charitable Donations

Our Commitment
WECU has a strong commitment to the needs of our community. Our goal is to support education, health and community concerns. Due to the current economy and the number of people in our community who are suffering and lacking basic human necessities, WECU's focus in our 2009 donation reviews will be on humanitarian issues. (Humanitarian: "promoting the welfare of humanity especially through the elimination of pain and suffering.")

In addition to financial contributions, WECU serves Whatcom County through sweat equity projects such as Habitat for Humanity, the Volunteer Center's Human Race, the Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run, and the Opportunity Council's School Supply Drive.
  • Requests for large monetary donations ($1000 or more) are granted quarterly. All requests must be submitted formally for review by our Social Responsibility Committee (SRC) according to the guidelines and schedule set forth below.
  • Requests for less than $1000 should be made in writing and directed to Maya Hartford at the Holly St. main office.

We will not consider requests for individuals; for sectarian or religious purposes; for propagandizing, influencing elections or legislation; for foundations seeking capital; or for organizations that have already received funding during the current calendar year.

Donation Guidelines

1.  All organizations requesting a donation of $1,000 or more must complete the Donation Request Form with the following information:
     a. Purpose of requested funds
     b. Amount requested
     c. A total itemized project budget
     d. Other funding sources solicited for the project

2. WECU will only consider requests from tax exempt organizations recognized under IRS 501(c)(3) guidelines or by the Secretary of State (WA) as a non-profit organization, and:
     a. Local organizations using the funds in Whatcom County
     b. Requests that conform to our 2009 mission
     c. Projects that are identified as a strong need in our community

3. WECU will not consider requests for:
     a. Sectarian, individual or religious purposes
     b.
Propagandizing, influencing elections or legislation
     c. Capital building for foundations

 d. Organizations that have already received funding during the current calendar year
     e. Organizations or events which could create controversy or friction among WECU members

     f.  Scholarship funds (other than the Western Washington University, Whatcom Community College, Bellingham Technical College and Northwest Indian College scholarships which are currently in place)

     g. Pledges to an individual for an event

Please note: Groups are encouraged to request an exact budget amount, or a portion of a larger budget item. WECU donations typically do not exceed $2,500 per recipient per year.
For large donation requests, the committee may ask a representative of the organization to make a presentation to the committee.
Because WECU receives so many worthwhile requests, we are typically unable to sponsor golf tournaments, school field trips, school graduation events, or donate more than $50 to school fundraisers.
